Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Emilion, the cru Ausone is one of the oldest. The tradition dictates that it occupies the place of the beautiful villa that the poet and proconsul Ausone owned at Lucaniac (Saint-Emilion). This is where the name "Ausone" comes from. Well exposed at the east and south, the vineyard is surrounded by a belt of rocks, great for a protection from the wind. The vineyard has been for many centuries in the same family that was able to keep the very old vines. The heirs of Mme Cécile VAUTHIER continue her piece of art and see their efforts recognized with success. These hundred year old vines can produce 20 barrels of a wine that has been among the elite.
The surface of the estate is 9 hectares, the average age of the vineyard is 45 to 50 years. The richesse of the soil constitutes the magnificience of the terroir: ¼ argillaceous, ¾ clay-limestone. The grape variety is 55% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot noir and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Premier Grand Cru classé A in the classification of Saint-Emilion, the work done in the vineyard is traditional and green harvest operations are led in order to respect the nature at its best and produce a quality wine: the leaves are in this way thinned out, the harvest is manual, the grapes are shorted out. The wines are aged in 100% new barrel.
