Among the oldest estate of the Médoc region, Château d’Arsac has had a enliven history since 900 years. Ownership of the sirs d’Arsac in the XIIth century than Thomas de MONTAIGNE, brother of the French philosopher, it was planted merlot and cabernet sauvignon at the end of the 18th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the vineyard d’Arsac is the biggest of the Médoc, but the phylloxera crises that devastated the vineyards, led to the pulling out of the totality of the vineyard. Because of the inexistence of the vineyard, the estate will not gain the Margaux appellation when this one is delimited in the 1954. The Margaux appellation will be given to the estate later on and after 10 years of hard work of Philippe RAOUX. He is the one to bring back the estate to life thanks to the reconstruction of the vineyard and the cellars.
The surface of the estate is 250 hectares but only 112 are used for the wines production. 54 hectares are planted in the Margaux appellation and 50 in the Haut-Médoc appellation. The grape variety proportion is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. Sauvignon blanc is also planted for the production of the white wine. The average age of the vineyard is 20 years.
Many investments in the vineyard and in the cellar led to the wines recognition. The fermentations are led in the vats (20%) and in barrels (80%). The wine ages in barrels for a total of 12 months. 1/3 of the barrels is new oak, 1/3 barrels from one wine and 1/3 barrels from two wines.
