A prestigious Cru Classé, marked by three hundred years of history ...
Under Henry III, Beychevelle was a fief of the Dukes of Épernon and in particular of the first of them, the great French admiral Jean-Louis Nogaret de La Valette. He was considered a superior man, because legend has it that the ships that passed by the Château had to hoist their sails as a sign of their subservience. Hence the name "Beychevelle", a derivative of "Baisse-Voile" ("Haul the sails!"), and the coat of arms of the château, a ship with a griffin as its bow (the griffin was the guardian of the wine crater of Dionysus in Greek mythology).
Built in the 17th century and rebuilt by the Marquis de Brassier in 1757, the château, also called the "Versailles des Médocs", was restored to its original splendour at the end of the 20th century. The elegance of its architecture is reflected in its racy and harmonious wine, which is served on the most prestigious tables of all continents.
Respect for the environment is a priority for the managers of Beychevelle: the château has the qualification for integrated agriculture ("agriculture raisonnée") and is certified by Terra Vitis, a winemakers' association for sustainable viticulture.
