Château Léoville Poyferré was created in 1840 due to various divisions of the Léoville estate and was named Second Cru Classé in the famous classification of 1855. The Poyferré family, defeated by mildew, kept the château until 1865, when they sold it to the banking and wine brokerage family Lalande et Erlanger, who were related to the Lawton family.

In 1920, the Cuvelier family from northern France, who had made a name for themselves in the wine trade since the 19th century, acquired the estate.

Didier Cuvelier took over the management of the winery in 1979 to bring it back into the top league of crus classés.

Since then, significant investments have been made every year, both technical and human. They are always in harmony with the exceptional terroir of Léoville Poyferré and aim to fully express this terroir in the wine. These constant innovative efforts make it possible to produce a great wine that is exported throughout the world.

It is characterised by perfect balance, great finesse, elegance and a remarkable ageing potential.
