This great growth owes its reputation as "the quintessential Graves" to its superb Günz gravel terroir in a single block. The estate's history dates back to the Crusades. The Scottish navigator Georges Smith acquired the chateau in the 18th century followed later by Monsieur Duffour-Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux, and a famous family of negociants.
Since its purchase by Florence and Daniel Cathiard in 1990, Smith Haut Lafitte has become one of the leading lights of Bordeaux thanks to its elegant, powerful and complex red and white wines. In twenty-two years, the owners have brought the wine of Smith Haut Lafitte up to the very highest level thanks to a unique working philosophy, the Bio Precision combining the best of nature (symbioses between the vines, the terroir, and the ecosystem) and the best of science (state-of-the-art methods such as satellite imagery and measuring electrical resistivity of the soil down to the centimetre).
