In former times situated in the periphery of Bordeaux, Chateau Haut Brion lies today, thanks to the growth of the city area, in the middle of the big city. The owners speak of a special microclimate, which produces an unmistakable character of the wines. On the 48 hectares of cultivated area 45% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are cultivated. Taking the production of the first and second wine together, the estate produces 200,000 bottles of wine annually. Furthermore, 8,000 bottles of white wine are produced.

Already in 1855, at that time in the possession of Joseph-Eugène Larrieu, Haut-Brion was appointed on the occasion of the world exhibition in Paris to the Premier Cru Classé of the Medoc wines. In the following time the owners changed very often. Only from 1935, with the sale to the American banker C. Douglas Dillon, peace returned. He later bought the neighbouring estate La Mission Haut-Brion. Normally Premier Cru properties must be in the hands of French citizens. However, since Haut Brion has had continuity since 1935, the American Dillon family is not affected by this. In 1959 Haut Brion and its red wines were also included in the list of Crus Classés des Graves. At present the estate is successfully managed by Jean-Philippe Delmas in the third generation.
