Cantenac Brown was founded in 1754 by the Irish-born Jacques Boyd. However, the name of the estate goes back to the painter Brown, who also designed the very beautiful chateau in Tudor style. After restless decades with several changes of ownership, Cantenac Brown was sold to the insurance company AXA in 1989. By larger investments and the advice of the legend Jean Michel Gazes (Lynch Bages) the quality went since then steeply upward. Since 2005, Cantenac Brown is owned by the Halabi family.
The vineyard of 54 hectares is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). The wine is aged in barriques that are 60% new.
