In Saint-Estephe, you will find a place called Marbuzet between Cos d’Estournel and Montrose. Several estates can be found in this hamlet, but the most notable among them is of course Château Haut-Marbuzet. The Renewal and rise of Haut-Marbuzet began in 1952 when Hervé DUBOSCQ buys 7 acres in life annuity. Without training, he developed a passion for wine and begins to reconstruct the broad estate divided a century earlier by the heirs of the MAC CARTHY family. Following various takeovers of neighboring and isolated vineyards, the area in 1996 will reach a surface of 61 hectares.
Today the estate covers 61 hectares and Henri Duboscq is still at its head, now assisted by his two sons Bruno and Hughes. The planting is 50% of Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% of Merlot and 10% of Cabernet Franc. A very large majority of the vineyard is carried by a gravel crest in the basement clay limestone with the presence of iron. In the vineyards, the high planting density is immediately noticed, 9000plants / ha on average, but let us point out here that a high density (not to be confused with high performance) allows among others to have at equal yield less grapes by vine stock, and therefore better quality grapes.
No chemical weed-killers are used in the vineyards which are plowed and scratched. What makes the personality of Haut-Marbuzet is probably largely at the winemaking level. The grapes are picked very ripe (almost overripe sometimes) then destemmed. Macerations are long. Henri Duboscq remains attached to the traditional material. Henri Duboscq works a lot on the diversification of wood and heaters in order to find a real wealth of aromas.
