Some associate the name of this château with Lord Byron when he was traveling in France, others with Charles Baudelaire who visited Odilon Redon, a neighbor of Chasse Spleen and illustrator of Spleen et Idéal.
The management of the winery has been a woman's business for thirty years: from 1976 Bernadette Villars, daughter of Jacques Merlaut, headed the château, from 1992 her daughter Claire and today her younger sister Céline.
The vineyards are located in Moulis-en-Médoc, the smallest appellation of the Médoc, right on the famous Route des Châteaux halfway between Margaux and Saint-Julien. Here one encounters an extraordinary variety of complementary terroirs from pure Garonne and Pyrenean pebbles to clay-limestone soils.
The wines of Chasse-Spleen reflect this diverse terroir of their appellation: the Cabernet Sauvignon growing on a thick layer of gravel gives them freshness and minerality, while the Merlot on clay and limestone soils provides rondeur and smoothness. Chasse Spleen is characterized by a very rich, round and full-bodied taste.
