The history of Pontet Canet has begun when Jean François de Pontet, Gouverneur in Médoc bought first parcels of land along Gironde. His successors added in 1757 another parcel called Canet where already stood a house called by the same name. From this time on the wine produced at the estate has been sold under the name Pontet Canet. From 1856 to 1975 the estate was in property of a Schleswig-Holstein family Cruse before it was bought by Guy Tesseron and is run by his sons Guy and Alfred Tesseron untill now.Continuous improvements in cellar and in winemaking have caused that Château Pontet Canet situated in the direct neighbourhood to Mouton- and Lafite-Rothschild has developed to the top vineyards in Pauillac and can be qualified much higher as its current fifth rank. The planting areas measure 81 ha with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wine ripens in barriques 60% of which are new each vintage. Pontet Canet is a classical Pauillac tasting somewhat toasty in its youth, but losing its angularity of former days while ripening.
