The name Gruaud Larose is composed of the names of the founders of the winery. In 1725 the abbot Gruaud bought 50 hectares of land and planted vines on it. After his death in 1781, his nephew, the Chevalier de Larose, inherited these vineyards and enlarged them to almost 80 hectares. For lack of heirs, the estate was auctioned off to two families in 1812. However, as they were unable to agree on joint management, the estate was divided in 1865 and only reunited by the Cordier family in 1934.
Since 1997, the Merlaut family has been managing the fortunes of this château and has been using ecological methods and integrated control in its winegrowing. The terroir consists of crests of deep Garonne pebbles from the Quaternary period (around 700,000 years ago), on which Cabernet Sauvignon reigns - according to the motto of Gruaud Larose "The king of wines, the wine of kings".
Château Gruaud Larose, whose size has not changed over the centuries, is one of the oldest wineries in the Médoc and deserves its status as Second Grand Cru Classé of 1855 more than ever.
