Château Margaux which history stretches back to the 12th century is one of the famous vineyards all over the world. During 60s and 70s the quality of wines sank continually. After this period of decay a Greek businessman André Mentzelopoulos bought the château for 72 million Francs and revived the winemaking. Because of the old law according to which the Premier-Châteaux are part of national heritage, the buyer of Château Margaux was nationalised first. Supported by the famous Bordelaiser oenologis Emile Peynaud the new owner invested large sums into wine cellar and vineyards. In order to improve the quality of „Gran Vin“ he started the production of second lable „Pavillon Rouge“. The vintage 1978 marks the beginning of Renaissance at Château Margaux. The tragedy indeed that André Mentzelopoulos whos arrival in the region as an outsider had caused controversial reactions firs died in 1980, long before he could taste the fruits of his labour. His daughter Corinne runs the château now. The vineyards are planded with 75 per cent of Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 per cent of Merlot and 2.5 per cent of Petit Verdot and Cabertet Franc each. Only 40 to 60 per cent of grapes are used for the „Gran Vin“; the rest is distributed under second label „Pavillon Rouge“. Château Margaux impresses by its purity of the fruit, the density of its structure and the harmony of its shape. The nose has classic hints to iron, mineral and rose petal of typically Margaux character. The temptation is great to drink it now, but the wine needs at least ten years more to develop its grace into real drinking pleasure.
