Second wine of Cos d'Estournel, the history of Cos d’Estournel begins in 1819 when the owner Louis Gaspard Lacoste de Maniban Marquis d’Estournel, inherits of some vines near the township of Cos, and decides to vinify it separately. The wine of Cos d’Estournel is born. Quickly, the wine takes the lead in front of prestigious crus and is exported to India. In 1855 Cos d’Estournel is ranked second crus classé in the classification of 1855. In all five owners were at Cos d’Estournel’s lead. The last one to date is Michel REYBIER that bought the estate in 2000. A few years after his arrival, he undertook important investments in the estate: brand new and up-to-date barrel cellar and fermentation cellar 100% by gravity:  new in the region. This year, Cos d'Estournel welcomed a new president Aymeric DE GIRONDE succeeding to the former president Jean Guillaume PRATS.

The vines that produce it are eventually used for the “Grand Vin” which is an 1855 Grand Cru Classé. They are grown on the same terroir and are treated in the same way. They are simply younger and their roots have yet to grow to their full depth in the gravelly soil. The vineyard of Cos d’Estournel is meticulously managed with a view of producing the highest quality  possible.

The vinification process at Cos is adapted to the nature of the harvest, thereby enabling an optimum expression of the terroir; this has been further improved with our new cellar. Rigorous sorting of the grapes, pumping over through racking off by gravity with the help of four lift-operated vats and precise control of fermentation temperatures make it possible to obtain a selection of the softest tannins and maximum preservation of the fruit. Les Pagodes de Cos stays in the barrels for twelve months. Maturing in new barrels made from prime murrain oak discretely highlights flavours and aromas with a well-balanced woodiness. Grapes from the youngest vines are blended to make Cos’s “second wine”.
