The Château Pape Clement situated in the Bordeaux' outskirts Pessac was founded in 1300 by the erstwhile archbishop of Bordeaux Bertrand de Goth (1264-1314) and subsequent Pope Clement. Thus Château Pape Clement belongs to the oldest vineyards in Bordeaux being cultivated since then continuously. Today the estate counts as a figurehead of Bernard Magrez group owning also Fombrauge in Saint Emilion and La Tour Carnet in Haut-Medoc. The planting area of 30ha is stocked with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The wine ripens during 20 months in entirely new barriques. Pape Clement is one of the most elegant and expressive Bordeaux wines and in its good vintages it can successfully compete with its neighbours Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion. The wine shows mineral and herbal notes typical for Graves. Pape Clement vinifies also a very complex and elegant white wine on the tiny planting area of 2,5ha consisting of 10% Muscadelle and 45% Sauvignon and Sémillion each.
